Premeditated Future

Why do we use 'going to' future?

We use 'going to' future to talk about predictions based on what we can see. Also, we use it to talk about plans and intentions. They are premeditated thoughts.

Prediction with evidence Plan / Intention

There is a banana skin on the floor.

Someone is going to fall.

There are black clouds.

It's going to rain.

There are only two minutes left. Maggie and Tom aren't going to finish the test on time.

I'm going to travel around the world when I retire.

I'm going to buy a new suit. I need one.

Sheila is going to have a holiday in Turkey next year.

Remember that we can also use Future Simple to make predictions for the future. However, we do not have any evidence with future simple tense predictions. They are just our thoughts or intuitions. We can be very sure of our predictions although they may not happen. We usually use ‘I’m sure.., I think…,I don’t think…,I hope… or probably’

For example...

He’ll probably fail in the test.

I think it’ll be rainy tomorrow.

I’m sure we’ll win the game.

She probably won’t accept any orders now.
